This is the song we composed for the Raising of the Flag Ceremony on Presentation Day. It is based on the famous Marty Mone song. We really love singing it.
On the 25th of May, Mrs. Morgan and some of the Senior Classroom pupils travelled to Gormanstown to collect our fourth green flag. It was a very enjoyable day & yet another proud moment for our school.
We did it!!! We have been awarded our fourth Green Flag on the theme of Travel. Representatives from the school will travel to Gormanstown, Co. Meath, on the 25th of May to accept our Flag at the Green Schools Awards Ceremony. It promises to be another proud moment for our school. Massive congratulations to all involved.
We had a really fun day when Sorcha visited our school to provide us with some Workshops and a Walkability Audit.
She started the day by showing the Junior Classroom how to safely use their Scooters.
Then the Senior Classroom was put through their paces with a Bike workshop.
After that, the Senior Classroom carried out a Walkability Audit of the route from the Community Centre to the School. Positive and negative aspects of the route were noted, and this information was used to compile a report back in the classroom. This report will be forwarded on to Monaghan County Council when it's completed.
On the 22nd of March we had our Travel Action day. To focus on our Travel theme, we completed several fun activities in school.
We went for a walk in our locality.
We performed our Safe Cross Code Song & Dance.
We played Who Wants To Be a Green Schools Millionaire.
We had an Interactive Travel Table Quiz
On the 23rd of March, we submitted our application for the renewal of our flag. If successful, we will be awarded with our fourth green flag, on the theme of Travel. Well done everyone involved for your hard work over the last two years!
Sorcha Brophy, our Green Schools Travel Officer, visited our school on Thursday, the 15th of March to carry out our Renewal Visit. The purpose of this visit is essentially to decide whether or not we have done enough to achieve the flag.
Sorcha was blown away by the how well our pupils had embraced the theme and was very impressed with the presentation laid on for her.
Firstly, some of our pupils spoke about the 7 steps of the Green Schools process, and the activities they had done to achieve each step. Then they read out some of our poetry, which she thought was fantastic. The Safe Cross Code dance was performed for her and after that Sorcha was shown the project we completed on the travel theme.
To finish, Mrs. Morgan created a slide show which documented all the work we completed over the past two years in photographic form. The pupils added their voice to it to narrate each slide and we chose some background music based on the Travel theme to accompany the slideshow. Sorcha really enjoyed it.
We feel our renewal visit went really well.
One of the Seven Steps of the Green Schools process is Involving and Informing. Our pupils have been very involved in the whole process. We then decided to focus some more on the informing aspect so we decided to create a large poster and display it in our local community centre.
Our pupils coloured in lots of pictures of children walking, cycling, using the bus and carpooling. Then these were cut out. Mrs. Morgan painted a scene of the school grounds and the children were then stuck in place on the picture. As a final touch, our Green Travel Code was added to the poster and our school name. We think it looks great and hope the public will be drawn to it in the community centre so our message is heard loud and clear.
Our pupils have been hard at work collecting data on the volume of traffic passing our school at various times during the day, and they also recorded the number of passengers in each vehicle.
Our results showed that the peak traffic times are in the morning and at home time. It also shows that our road is reasonably quiet during the school day. The majority of traffic outside our school actually stops at our school. There is little passing traffic.
Below are some of the fantastic poetry the Senior Classroom composed on the Travel theme. They really are effective in getting our message across. Well done!
