Our last debate was against Clontibret. The motion was 'Ireland should give more aid to poorer countries". We were proposing the motion. A big well done to all the team who were narrowly beaten.
When we get the title of our debate the whole class has a big discussion to try and come up with either points that we can make to support our argument or points that we think the other team will make.
Next, we get into three groups and help our speakers prepare their speeches. This takes a long time and a lot of work as each speaker only has three minutes to make their points, and that includes rebuttals. A rebuttal is where we contradict points one of the other team has said. This is hard because you have to listen carefully to the other speakers and take notes.
Pictured below are five of our team. (one person was off sick. We'll retake the photo when he comes back.)
