A Brief History of St. Michael's N.S.
St. Michael's N.S. was first established 1933, following the amalgamation of two schools within the locality Lisleitrim N.S. and Annaglough N.S. The school was built on a site which was acquired from the Clarke family Rackwallace. Much of the stone used for the building came from the "Rock Field" which was in close proximity to the school. Originally the school had three classrooms, two of which were divided by a partition which was later removed, resulting in two large classrooms. The school was later to have an extension added to the back of the building which included a lunch room and boys and girls toilets. The installation of flush toilets and running water was a huge modernisation to school facilities at that time although children still had to exit the main school building to access the toilets. More recently the school underwent major improvements with the building of a further extension which includes indoor toilets for the pupils, new staff toilets, staffroom/office and storage areas. We have also recently acquired a new prefab for learning support and resource teaching. Under the Summer Works Scheme 2010 a new heating system was installed throughout the school and the main building was completely re-roofed under the 2010 Emergency Works Scheme. The school grounds are now monitored by CCTV and a security access system has been installed in the school building.
Principals who served in the school down the years
The Principal of Annaglough N.S. , Master Dan Mooney was appointed first Pricipal of St. Michael's, Rackwallace and was assisted by Mrs. Macklin, Crosshue and Miss MaryAnn Murphy, Cordevlish. Some time later, Miss Alice McCarthy joined the staff of St. Michael's and in 1939 she and Mr. Mooney were married. Both Mr. & Mrs. Mooney continued to teach in the school until their respective retirements. Upon Master Mooney's retirement in 1966 the pupils from the nearby Rakeeragh N.S. transferred to St. Michael's, Rackwallace under the leadership of Master Sean Murphy who served as Principal until his retirement in June 1991. Mrs. Kay Macklin was appointed Principal in 1991 and she was succeeded in 1997 by Mr. Jimmy McGeough. Mr. McGeough retired in 2017 and Mr. Séamus Grundy was appointed principal.
